Impact Verification

BlueMark, a Tideline company, provides independent impact assurance services for investors and companies.

Impact Marked with Confidence

Tideline formally launched BlueMark® in October 2020 as an independent company to meet the growing market demand for impact verification services. As an expert consultant to the impact investing industry, Tideline was ideally positioned to help clients verify their impact mandates, practices and reporting, thereby providing stakeholders with greater confidence that impact is being achieved.

Early in 2019, Tideline developed a methodology for verifying investor alignment with the Operating Principles for Impact Management (OPIM), which were first introduced in April 2019 by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) alongside a group of 60 founding signatories. The interest in this initial service, and the market need for a trusted third-party verifier, led to the development of BlueMark as a separate entity.

CASE STUDY

CALVERT IMPACT CAPITAL

Calvert Impact Capital is a non-profit investment firm that pools capital from individual and institutional investors to issue loans to mission-driven organizations serving communities around the world. In line with its reputation as a leader in the impact investing market, Calvert Impact Capital was a founding signatory of the Operating Principles for Impact Management (the Principles).

BlueMark* was identified as the ‘right fit’ to conduct a verification of Calvert Impact Capital’s impact management (IM) system for two key reasons. First, BlueMark demonstrated an understanding of Calvert Impact Capital’s unique business model and strategy as a private debt investor. Second, BlueMark was able to leverage its industry expertise and knowledge to deliver concrete recommendations on how Calvert Impact Capital could improve its IM practices and bring its IM system into greater alignment with the Principles.

BlueMark conducted the verification engagement using its standard four-week engagement structure. During those weeks, BlueMark worked closely with the Calvert Impact Capital team to conduct a series of discussions, interviews, and document review sessions with members of the firm’s leadership and impact-dedicated team. BlueMark’s verification findings not only highlighted the areas in which Calvert Impact Capital excels in its impact management practice, but also identified areas where Calvert Impact Capital could continue to improve.
