Public Equities: The Case for Impact at Scale

Public Equities: The Case for Impact at Scale

Public equities present one of the greatest enigmas and opportunities in impact investing. On the one hand, because impact investing is defined as having a high degree of intention, contribution, and measurement, questions arise in public equities as to the extent to which it is possible to: a) target specific social or environmental outcomes; b) provide differentiated capital and influence; and c) access the data essential to tracking performance.

On the other hand, public equities as an asset class is too big to ignore in the race to address urgent social and environmental challenges, accounting for the largest share of all managed assets (40%), according to BCG. And investors using public equities to advance targeted impact outcomes have a growing conviction in the viability of the approach.

In this Compass Series panel, we invite leaders from BlackRock, Wellington Management, UBS, Coeli Circulus, and the Global Impact Investing Network to share their perspectives at a time of growing scrutiny of sustainable investment strategies and ask whether it’s time to elevate public equities in the impact consciousness.

A recap that summarizes some of the key takeaways from the panel can be found here.
